Supplement 3PL for Brands That Import: FDA-Registered Storage and In-House Customs

What supplement brands that import need from a 3PL: licensed customs brokerage, FDA-registered storage, lot tracking and one inventory pool for DTC, Amazon and retail.

Supplement brands that manufacture overseas have two problems most fulfillment guides skip: getting product through U.S. customs cleanly, and storing it in a warehouse that fits the regulatory picture once it lands. Most “best supplement 3PL” lists only cover the second half. This guide covers both, and the questions to ask before you sign.

What a Supplement Brand That Imports Actually Needs From a 3PL

A domestic supplement brand mostly needs accurate pick and pack, lot control and channel integrations. A brand importing finished goods or packaging from Asia or Europe needs all of that plus a clean path from the port to the shelf. In practice, that means five things:

  1. Licensed customs brokerage that files your entries and coordinates the release with the warehouse receiving your container.
  2. FDA-registered storage for the facilities holding your inventory, with the registration verified rather than assumed.
  3. Lot tracking so every unit shipped can be traced back to the lot it came from if you ever need to pull product.
  4. One inventory pool that serves DTC, Amazon and retail orders, so you are not splitting stock across providers.
  5. Port proximity so containers move from the terminal to the dock without extra handoffs and detention charges.

FDA Registration: What It Does and Doesn’t Mean

FDA registers facilities. It does not approve or certify 3PLs, so “FDA-approved warehouse” is a marketing phrase, not a credential. What you want to know is which specific buildings are registered and what they are registered to do.

At Argents, the Elgin, Illinois (Chicago area) and Ladson, South Carolina (Port of Charleston) warehouses are FDA-registered facilities for holding and storing goods. Our Tacoma, Washington facility is not FDA-registered, so FDA-regulated inventory is planned into Elgin or Ladson. We’d rather tell you that up front than have you find out during onboarding.

Why In-House Customs Brokerage Matters for Imported Supplements

Imported supplements are regulated products, so they can draw more scrutiny at entry than general merchandise. When your forwarder, customs broker and warehouse are three different companies, a hold at the port becomes three phone calls and a missed launch date.

Argents is a freight forwarder, licensed customs broker and e-commerce fulfillment provider in one company. Our customs brokerage license is held in-house, and our brokers work alongside the warehouse teams receiving your freight. The same team that files your entry knows when your container is cleared and when it will be at our dock. For the mechanics, see our guide to how customs clearance works.

Lot Tracking and Recalls

Lot tracking is the difference between a targeted recall and pulling every unit you own. Ask any provider to show you, in its warehouse management system, how a lot number follows a unit from receiving through the order it shipped on. Argents tracks inventory by lot, and you can see stock in real time through our inventory management portal.

One Inventory Pool for DTC, Amazon and Retail

Most supplement brands sell on their own site, on Amazon and increasingly through retail. Running each channel from a different warehouse multiplies inventory and freight cost. Argents runs DTC parcels, Amazon FBA prep, Seller Fulfilled Prime and retail EDI orders (Walmart, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Best Buy and others) from a single inventory pool. See how that worked for a consumer brand in our Walmart retail fulfillment case study.

Where Argents Fits, and Where It Doesn’t

Argents is a strong fit for mid-market supplement brands that import and want one accountable team from origin to doorstep, with FDA-registered storage in the Chicago area or near the Port of Charleston. Storage starts at a 100-pallet commitment.

We are not the right fit if you need refrigerated or frozen storage, which our facilities do not offer, or if you ship a few hundred orders a month with no import program. A smaller specialist will usually serve you better at that stage, and we’ll say so.

Questions to Ask Any Supplement 3PL

  • Which of your buildings are FDA-registered, and what is each registered for?
  • Who files my customs entries, and are the brokers your employees or a partner’s?
  • How do you track lots, and how fast can you isolate a lot if I need to pull it?
  • How do you rotate inventory by expiration date?
  • Can you ship DTC, Amazon and retail EDI orders from one inventory pool?
  • How far is the warehouse from the port my containers arrive at?

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Argents FDA-registered?

Yes, for two of our three warehouses. The Elgin, Illinois and Ladson, South Carolina facilities are FDA-registered for holding and storing goods. The Tacoma, Washington facility is not FDA-registered.

Does an FDA-registered warehouse mean the 3PL is FDA-approved?

No. FDA registers facilities but does not approve or certify 3PLs. Registration means the facility is on FDA’s list and subject to inspection. Ask any provider which of its buildings are registered and what that registration covers.

Who files the customs entry when my supplements arrive from overseas?

The importer of record is responsible for the entry, and most brands use a licensed customs broker to file it. At Argents, licensed customs brokers on our own team file the entry, so the people clearing your container also coordinate its delivery into our warehouse.

Can one 3PL handle my DTC, Amazon and retail supplement orders?

Yes, if it runs every channel from one inventory pool. Argents ships DTC parcels, prepares Amazon FBA shipments, fulfills Seller Fulfilled Prime orders and ships retail orders over EDI to retailers including Walmart from the same stock.

What is the minimum to work with Argents?

Storage starts at a 100-pallet commitment, which suits growing mid-market supplement brands that import in container or pallet volumes.
